Feral cats are the offspring of lost or abandoned domestic cats that live in colonies anywhere they can find food and shelter. Soon a neighbourhood can become overrun with cats and the usual outcome is that they are rounded up and destroyed.

The Cat Action Trust (CAT) is a charity set up by cat lovers to address this problem. These volunteers trap as many feral cats as possible and have them neutered. They also attempt to find homes for the kittens. I first came accross this organisation when I found a litter of four tiny abandoned kittens in my garden. Although we tried feeding them , one kitten died after a few days, the others were not thriving and would quickly die too without expert help. Through our local pet shop we met Judy from CAT. Judy took the remaining kittens to her house, she fed them every two hours and kept them warm under an infra red lamp. One died because of infection but she returned two healthy identical tabby cats to us. They have since been vacinated and neutered so they will not be contributing to the local cat population. Although we never planned to have cats they are fun to have around and have developed interesting personalities. We are really enjoying them.

I was very impressed with Judy’s genuine love for animals and their welfare. If you would like to know more about the work of CAT you can visit their UK website here.
